ITR Refund Status: What Each Message Actually Means

A plain-English guide to every status message you'll see while waiting for your refund.

Why Does the Status Matter?

Your ITR refund doesn't just appear. It moves through a pipeline: processing β†’ verification β†’ refund initiation β†’ bank credit. Each stage has its own status message β€” and each message tells you exactly where it's stuck (if it is).

Here's every status you'll see and what to actually do about it.

The Status Messages, Decoded

"Return Uploaded and Pending for Verification"

What it means: You filed your ITR, but haven't e-verified it yet.

Your return doesn't enter processing until you verify it. Without verification, it's as if you never filed.

What to do:

  • Go to incometax.gov.in β†’ e-File β†’ Income Tax Returns β†’ e-Verify Return
  • Use Aadhaar OTP (fastest), net banking, or bank account validation
  • You have 30 days from filing to verify

"Successfully Verified"

What it means: Verification received. Your return is now in the queue for processing by CPC Bengaluru.

No action needed. Processing typically takes 7–45 days depending on the filing volume. Peak season (July–September) is slower.

"Processing"

What it means: CPC is actively computing your tax liability, cross-checking TDS with Form 26AS, and validating your deductions.

No action needed. This phase can take anywhere from 2 hours to 3 weeks.

"Processed β€” Refund Determined"

What it means: CPC processed your return and confirmed you're owed a refund. The refund has been sent to the Refund Banker (State Bank of India).

What to do: Verify your bank account details are correct. Go to Profile β†’ Bank Accounts and confirm the account linked for refund. If it's wrong, update it before the refund fails.

Expected time to bank credit: 5–10 business days from this status.

"Refund Sent"

What it means: SBI has initiated the NEFT to your bank account. You'll see it in 1–3 business days.

If you don't receive it within 5 business days of this status appearing, check:

  1. Is the bank account active?
  2. Does the name on the account match your PAN exactly?
  3. Is NEFT enabled on that account?

"Refund Failed"

What it means: SBI tried to send the refund but it bounced. Most common reasons:

  • Bank account closed or dormant
  • Name mismatch between PAN and bank account
  • Wrong IFSC code
  • Account not linked to your PAN

What to do:

  • Go to incometax.gov.in β†’ Services β†’ Refund Reissue
  • Select the correct bank account (or add a new one)
  • Raise a Refund Reissue request

The refund will be resent, typically within 7–14 days of the reissue request.

"No Demand No Refund"

What it means: After processing, CPC found that your tax liability and TDS exactly balance out β€” nothing is owed to you and you owe nothing extra.

This is fine. No action needed if you're happy with this. If you believe a refund should have been due, check your Form 26AS vs what you declared in the ITR.

"Demand Determined"

What it means: CPC's calculation shows you actually owe more tax than what was deducted. They'll send you a formal notice (usually under Section 143(1)).

What to do:

  1. Download the Intimation notice from your mail/portal
  2. Compare their computation with yours
  3. If you agree: pay the demand via Challan 280 on the portal
  4. If you disagree: file a Response to Intimation and dispute specific line items

Don't ignore this. Unpaid demands accrue 1% monthly interest under Section 220(2).

"Defective Return β€” Notice under Section 139(9)"

What it means: Something in your return is inconsistent β€” for example, wrong ITR form used, incomplete schedules, gross receipt not matching 26AS.

What to do: You'll receive a notice with a specific reason. You have 15 days to respond on the portal. File a revised return with the correction.

  1. Form 26AS mismatch β€” The most common processing delay cause. Open 26AS on the portal and verify all TDS entries match what you declared.
  2. Bank account not pre-validated β€” Go to Profile β†’ Bank Accounts β†’ Pre-validate. The refund only goes to a pre-validated account.
  3. Grievance portal β€” After 90 days without resolution, file a grievance on incometax.gov.in β†’ e-Nivaran or call the CPC helpline: 1800-103-0025 (toll-free).
