Why We Built FiledIn

Because tax season shouldn't feel like a punishment for people who don't speak finance.

📖 The Story

It started with a WhatsApp message: "Bhai, mera refund kab aayega?"

We'd all been there. You file your ITR, e-verify it, and then... nothing. Silence. For weeks. You log into the income tax portal and it says "Return Processing" — but what does that mean? Is it stuck? Is everyone else's stuck too? Is the system down? Should you be worried?

We're a small team of developers who got fed up with the fact that India's Income Tax Department publishes a massive amount of public data about ITR filing — but buries it in PDFs and government portals that look like they were designed in 2003.

So we built FiledIn. Not to file your return for you — but to make the whole process feel less like you're navigating a government maze blindfolded. We pull the same public data, clean it up, visualize it, and explain it in language that a person who hasn't read the Income Tax Act can actually understand.

The "explain it simply" obsession is deliberate. India has 140 crore people and a large chunk of them are first-generation earners, new to formal employment, with no family member who can answer "which ITR form should I use?" We built FiledIn for them. We built it for the 22-year-old at their first job who doesn't know what Form 16 is. For the freelancer who doesn't know they should be filing ITR-3. For the person who's been ignoring tax season because it feels too complicated.

Public data should be publicly understandable. That's the whole idea.

How the Data Works

Twice daily, an automated pipeline fetches ITR statistics from the official Income Tax Department portal (incometax.gov.in). The data — registered users, returns filed, e-verified returns, processed counts — is public, updated regularly by the government.

We store historical data so you can see trends, not just today's snapshot. We calculate daily changes, growth rates, and processing backlogs. Then we display it on a dashboard built for humans, not accountants.

What We Are (and Aren't)

FiledIn is 100% independent. We are not affiliated with the Income Tax Department, the Government of India, or any tax-filing platform.

We don't file returns, we don't access your PAN data, and we don't store personal information. All data we display is aggregate public data — the kind you could find yourself if you knew where to look and had the patience to parse government PDFs.

The Tax AI answers general questions. It's not a substitute for a CA for complex situations.

What We Stand For

Plain English, always

Every metric gets a human explanation. We measure success by whether someone with zero finance background can understand what they're looking at.

Free, forever

The dashboard, calculators, Tax AI — all free. Financial information shouldn't be paywalled. India's middle class deserves the same tools that the wealthy get from their CAs.

Honest about limitations

We tell you when data is stale, when the government has paused updates, and when our AI is in demo mode. No fake live counters, no inflated numbers.

Built for first-timers

Every feature is designed for someone who is encountering it for the first time. Experienced tax filers will find it fast; beginners will find it friendly.
