Where Do You Stand? India's Income Percentile Data from 8.5 Cr Filers

Real data from 8.5 crore taxpayers shows the exact income thresholds for top 1%, 5%, and 10%.

Where Does This Data Come From?

The Income Tax Department publishes aggregate statistics from all ITR filers each year. The most recent published data covers 8.5 crore individual taxpayers who filed for AY 2023-24.

This isn't a survey or estimate โ€” it's actual filed returns. It tells us the real income distribution of India's formal earning population.

What These Numbers Actually Mean

If you earn โ‚น8 Lakh/year

You're in the top 30% of all ITR filers. More than 70% of people who filed returns declared less income than you.

If you earn โ‚น15 Lakh/year

You're in the top 14% โ€” rarer than you probably assumed.

If you earn โ‚น25 Lakh/year

You're in the top 7%. If you have a colleague who earns this, they're genuinely uncommon.

If you earn โ‚น50 Lakh/year

You're in the top 2% of all income tax filers.

The "8.5 Crore Filers" Context

India's working population is roughly 50 crore. Only 8.5 crore filed income tax returns. That means:

  • ~83% of working Indians don't file ITR โ€” either below the threshold, in the informal economy, or non-compliant
  • The ITR filer base skews heavily urban and formal-sector

This matters for interpreting the percentiles: being in the "top 10% of filers" is not the same as being in the "top 10% of all Indians." The filer pool is already a select group.

Average vs Median: Why They're So Different

The average income of ITR filers looks high because a small number of extremely high earners pull the average up.

The median income (the midpoint โ€” half earn more, half earn less) is much lower:

  • Median declared income among filers: approximately โ‚น3.8โ€“4.5 lakh
  • This means more than half of all filers earn under โ‚น5 lakh/year

If your income is around โ‚น7โ€“8 lakh, you're already well above the median filer.

Which City You're In Changes Everything

The data isn't broken down by city, but anecdotally (and from RBI/NHB data):

  • A โ‚น15L income in Mumbai or Bengaluru is average for the tech/finance workforce
  • The same โ‚น15L in a Tier-2 city places you among the top earners locally
  • Metro cost-of-living can be 2โ€“3x that of smaller cities at the same income level

The income percentile calculator on FiledIn uses national ITR data, so it reflects the national ranking โ€” not city-specific.

Why Tax Rates Feel Disproportionate

The โ‚น12L zero-tax threshold under the New Regime means roughly 80โ€“85% of ITR filers effectively pay zero income tax after the Section 87A rebate.

The top 5โ€“7% of earners (above ~โ‚น20 lakh) pay the bulk of personal income tax collected in India.

This means: if you're in the 30% tax bracket, you're funding a disproportionate share of government revenue. That's not unusual globally โ€” most countries have a similarly concentrated tax base.

How to Use This Data

  1. Salary negotiations โ€” Knowing you're in the top 10% of earners nationally gives context when evaluating offers
  2. Lifestyle choices โ€” Understanding the distribution helps calibrate lifestyle expectations vs peer group
  3. Tax planning โ€” If you're above โ‚น20L, you're in a small enough pool that optimal deduction use matters more
  4. Filing strategy โ€” Use the Income Percentile Calculator on FiledIn to see exactly where you stand in the current data
